Trendsetter Travel Golf Tours invites you to join us on our inaugural Danube River Golf Cruise commencing in Budapest and concluding in Vilshofen.  Pre-cruise we will spend 3 nights in Budapest and post cruise, 4 nights in Munich.  The Danube is the last of the major navigable European rivers on which TTGT has not run a golf cruise.  Your hosts sailed on AmaMagna (the sister ship of AmaRudi) in August 2025 to scope this 600 km section of the Danube River and concluded it is indeed very scenic and with a wealth of excellent courses near the river, merits a golf cruise tour.  The cruise tour, with an immersive 7-night cruise onboard AmaWaterways’ AmaRudi, is structured to present to you the histories of Budapest and Munich and simultaneously enjoy golf at a selection of the best golf courses in Hungary, Austria and Bavaria.

Both a 7 and 8 game golf programme is offered. This includes 2 games pre-cruise in Budapest and 2 games post-cruise in Munich.  On the cruise itself there are 4 games, with your choice to play just 3, or all 4. Those selecting only 3 games are entitled to a discount.  Our golf programme includes 3 of the top 10 golf courses in Austria and 3 of Bavaria’s leading golf courses. In Budapest, we will play the same course twice.

Apart from the pleasures of golf, our stay in Budapest affords us plenty of time to self-explore and also enjoy one or two of the offered tours while onboard AmaRudi.  Most will not know of Budapest’s turbulent history over the past 100 years – including its role as an Axis Power in WWII, its eventual occupation by Germany, the Hundred Day Siege and its capture by the Soviet Union that lead to 35 years under communist rule within the Iron Curtain.  Hungary finally became a democratic state in 1990, after which the process of rebuilding and restoration commenced.  Budapest, now largely restored, is a beautiful city and with many UNESCO designated sites, makes for fascinating exploration on foot.

When not playing golf from the cruise, you will be free to participate in included AmaWaterways tours, most of which offer standard and more active hiking or biking options.  We encourage you to join these tours in both Budapest and Bratislava.  Vienna will undoubtedly be another highlight along this beautiful river peppered with several less famous but equally charming towns and villages.

On completion of our cruise, we will transfer to Munich where again there will be ample time to combine both golfing and touring.  In Munich, explore the historic walled city centre and join our full day tour which includes the BMW factory/museum and the preserved site of the Dachau Concentration Camp.

Our pre and post-cruise hotel stays are at 5-star properties, namely the Kempinski in Budapest and the Rocco Forte Charles Hotel in Munich.  Both are well-located and offer refined luxury in these gracious cities.

Significant additional information on the AmaWaterways component of our tour can be found on the following link: https://www.amawaterways.au/au/ships/amamagna

Your tour hosts are Adrienne Witteman and David Cooper, Directors/Co-Owners of Trendsetter Travel Golf Tours.  Both are enthusiastic golfers and longstanding members of one of Sydney’s most prestigious golf clubs.  They have golfed and cruised extensively around the world and invite you to join them on this fantastic cruise and golf tour.

Four days later, after the 9 September 2027 conclusion of our tour, TTGT will commence an 18-night Crystal Golf Cruise from Lisbon to Rome.  Interested guests have the option of taking either or both 9-night cruise options: Lisbon to Barcelona 13/22 Sept or Barcelona to Rome 22 Sept/1 Oct.  That itinerary has already been released (see www.trendsettertravel.com.au/GC70) .

Those on the Budapest to Munich Golf Cruise will receive an AUD 250 pp contribution to their travel costs from Munich to Lisbon if joining either 9 night cruise option or AUD 500 pp if joining the 18 night golf cruise.  The cruise must be booked through Trendsetter to qualify for this discount.  The combined river and golf cruise is another excellent back to back golf tour option for those looking for a low effort way to extend their stay among the charms of Europe.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Thursday 26 August 2027 – Budapest

Arrive independently in Budapest and check into the 5-star Kempinski Hotel Corvinus, our hotel for the next 3 nights.  Enjoy Premium Deluxe category, 30 sqm accommodation with king or twin configuration, and a spacious bathroom with walk in shower and separate bath.  The Kempinski is located in the heart of Budapest and is an easy walk to countless restaurants, many with outdoor seating for a perfect summer’s dinner.

You will spend 4 x days and nights in Budapest and have a wonderful opportunity to learn about the turbulent 20th century history of Budapest including pre WWII, Hungary’s part in joining the Axis forces with Germany, its eventual occupation by Germany, 100 day siege at the end of WWII and eventual capture and then occupation by the Soviet Union.  This then followed 35 years of communist rule under the Iron Curtain of Soviet satellite countries.  Independence followed in 1990.  Hungary now presents as a democratic country with Budapest one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.   Much has been rebuilt since the devastation resulting from the battle for Budapest at the end of WWII and the city abounds with UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  Your hotel is located in the heart of Budapest and is an easy walk to countless restaurants many with outdoor seating.

Additional hotel nights are available at EUR 330 per night, inclusive of taxes, service charges and breakfast.

Tonight, meet at 7.00 pm for TTGT’s welcome drinks and dinner at the Kempinski Hotel.

Accommodation – 3 nights – Kempinski Hotel – Erzsébet tér 7-8 · 1051 Budapest

Day 2 – Friday 27 August 2027 – Budapest – Golf Game 1 – BOTANIQ Máriavölgyi Golf Club

Golf Game 1 – Today we play the first of our two Budapest golf games on the BOTANIQ Máriavölgyi Golf Club, a 40 minute drive from our hotel.  BOTANIQ Máriavölgyi Golf Club is the stand-out golf course within an acceptable drive of Budapest.  When visiting in August 2025, we were impressed by the well-conditioned and challenging golf course, the grand club rooms and magnificent bar areas overlooking an expansive outdoor terrace.  The golf course is built over rolling countryside with water hazards regularly  in play.  The short but challenging par 3, 17th hole island green is a fun test of one’s golf skills.

Day 3 – Saturday 28 August 2027 – Budapest – Golf Game 2 – BOTANIQ Máriavölgyi Golf Club

Golf Game 2 – Better prepared after yesterday’s game, you’ll be looking to improve today’s score for sure as we play BOTANIQ Máriavölgyi Golf Club for a second time.  To add to the fun, we’ve added in Hungarian Champion Ladies and Mens 36 hole singles events, in addition to our usual 18 hole stableford single and 2BBB competitions.

Day 4 – Sunday 29 August 2027 – Budapest – Board AmaRudi

Today enjoy a relaxing breakfast followed by a free morning before a noon transfer to the AmaRudi, our home for the next 7 nights. [Please note, the transfer time is approximate]

AmaRudi is named after AmaWaterways’ co-Founder, co-Owner and President Rudi Schreiner.  As the newly launched sister ship to Amamagna, it is the widest riverboat in Europe and has twice the area/tonnage of standard European riverboats.  We have contracted a selection of the best and largest suites on AmaRudi, and can offer a 33 sqm (Cat. SA) or 44 sqm suite (Cat. GS).  This size of suite is two to three times the size of a balcony room/suite on most European river cruise competitors’ ships.

Apart from the luxury of space in your own suite, you’ll enjoy four unique dining venues, lounges, a library, a laundry, gym and two massage rooms, as well as a sizeable pool and pickleball court on the sun deck.  The restaurant offerings are comprised of a Main Restaurant, the beautiful Chef’s Table, Jimmy’s (for relaxed, family-style share dining) and Al Fresco, with intimate seasonal dining by night and casual fare by day.

Day 5 – Monday 30 August 2027 – Budapest – Depart 5.30 pm

AmaRudi will remain berthed in Budapest until after 5 pm.  So today, until then, you will have the chance to take guided tours of the Buda (hilly) and Pest (flat) sides of the Danube River.

Perhaps enjoy a tour that walks you through the city’s Castle District to marvel at the fairytale turrets of the Fisherman’s Bastion and take in the breathtaking panorama below.  Or, for the more athletic among us, enjoy a hike to Budapest’s Castle Hill.  In the afternoon, there’s a walking tour of Pest to include the Hungarian Parliament Building and the many monuments and historic buildings lining the historic Pest side of the Danube.

Day 6 – Tuesday 31 August 2027 – Bratislava – Slovakia – berthing 2 pm to 8 pm

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is a fascinating city and is unique in being the only European city to abut two countries, Hungary and Austria.  Its title as the Coronation City of Kings reflects it having hosted crowning ceremonies for 11 Hungarian kings and queens between 1536 and 1830.

Shortly after the break-up of the Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe in 1990, Czechoslovakia split into two countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.  Much of the history of Slovakia can be learnt during an AmaWaterways walking tour of Bratislava today, or for the more active, a hike to Bratislava’s castle overlooking the city with magnificent views of the Danube River and three neighbouring countries.  [The following image is of AmaRudi’s sister ship AmaMagna since construction of the former is not yet completed at time of publication].

Day 7 – Wednesday 1 September 2027 – Vienna – Austria – berthing 8 am to 11.30 pm – Golf Game 3 – Colony Golf Club Gutenhof

Today, we berth in the outskirts of Vienna, the capital of Austria with a population of around two million citizens.  Known as perhaps the world’s most liveable city, it is famous for classical music, imperial history, coffeehouse culture and museums.  After golf, why not spend some time ashore? With AmaRudi not departing until 11.00 p.m. you might even be tempted to dine on Vienna’s best Wiener Schnitzel at one of several renowned restaurants.

Golf Game 3: Crossing the Danube River, we drive 30 minutes south of Vienna to play the West Course at Colony Golf Club Gutenhof (1989), ranked #3 in Austria. The club comprises 2 x 18 hole courses and has previously hosted the Austrian Ladies and Mens’ Golf Opens.

Day 8 – Thursday 2 September 2027 – Krems (8 am to 2 pm) – Spitz (4.30 pm to 7 pm) Golf Game 4 - Diamond Country Club

AmaRudi berths this morning in Krems an der Donau for 6 hours and then sails up the Danube for a little over 2 hours to Spitz.  Located alongside the Danube River, Krems an der Donau (population circa 25,000) has one of Austria’s most beautifully preserved medieval town centres and there should be time for a short walk around the town before we head to golf.

Golf Game 4: Diamond Country Club, the #7 ranked golf course in Austria is a regular venue for the Austrian Open.  Post golf and after a relaxing drink or two and prize giving, we will transfer to Spitz, a small village with around 1200 residents, to reboard AmaRudi.

Day 9 – Friday 3 September 2027 – Linz – Austria - berthing 9.30 am to 9.30 pm– Golf Game 5 – Linz St Florian Golf Club

AmaRudi will berth for 12 hours in Linz, the third most populous city in Austria  (120,000 residents) after Vienna and Graz.  Our berth is central so after returning from golf, take the opportunity for an easy walk to the old town centre, with the largest town square in Austria.

Golf Game 5 – Today we play Linz St Florian Golf Club (1976), the leading course in the area and the 9th ranked course in Austria.  Designed by British architect Donald Harradine, it has a demanding routing through rolling countryside with many strategically placed lakes.  Post golf, the terrace adjoining the clubrooms is a relaxing venue to enjoy an Austrian wine or beer.

Day 10 – Saturday 4 September 2027 – Passau (9 am to 12.30 pm) – Vilshoven (4.30 pm – overnight) – Golf Game 6

This morning, we berth in Passau, another historic Danube River town located at the confluence of 3 rivers – the Ils, Inn and Danube rivers.  AmaRudi stays here only 3 hours before relocating to our overnight berth, Vilshofen.

Golf Game 6:  Today we coach a short distance south of the Danube River to the magnificent Quellness Golf Resort, with its three Bernhard Langer designed championship golf courses – (1) Beckenbauer, (2) Porsche and (3) Brunnwies.  We are booked to play the Beckenbauer Course, the venue for many European Golf Tour events.  After golf and drinks, we’ll rejoin AmaRudi at its new berth in the pretty town of Vilshoven.

Day 11 – Sunday 5 September 2027 – Disembark AmaRudi – Transfer to Munich

This morning bid farewell to AmaRudi as the cruise component of the tour concludes after breakfast.  Our transfer by coach/luggage van to Munich will take around 2.5 hours (with a convenience stop half way) and following our lunchtime arrival you are free to sightsee or wander as you wish.

Located near the Alps, Munich, with a population of 1.6 million, is the 3rd largest city in Germany and is the main city in Bavaria, the large region of southern Germany.  Renowned as one of Germany’s wealthiest and safest cities, it is also known for its elegant architecture, museums, beer culture, and high quality of life.

Your room at The Charles Hotel is large, with an area of 40 sqm, can be king or twin bedded and features a bath and stand-alone shower.

Day 12 – Monday 6 September 2027 – Munich - Golf Game 7 - St Eurach Golf Club

Golf Game 7: After a relaxing breakfast we will travel 45 minutes to the foot of the Alps to play the highly rated St Eurach Golf Club.  Designed by renowned golf course architect Donald Harradine in 1972, this is one of the leading golf courses in Bavaria and has been the venue for many European Tour events.

Day 13 – Tuesday 7 September 2027 –– Munich Day of Guided Tour

An interesting day awaits. An orientation tour of Munich will include a visit to the BMW motor works, with a 60 minute guided tour of the BMW Museum housing historic and modern BMW vehicles, motorcycles, engines and prototypes encompassing 100 years of history.  After a relaxing lunch, there is an optional visit the nearby Dachau Concentration Camp with those choosing to forego this visit being delivered back to The Charles Hotel for a free afternoon.

The Dachau Memorial Site marks the location of the former SS‑run Dachau concentration camp.  It was built in 1933, shortly after Hitler came to power, and was intended to house political prisoners of the Nazi regime.  Over time, this expanded to include British spies, members of the resistance and others.  After 1945, the site was transformed into a memorial and museum to commemorate the victims, preserve history, and educate visitors.

The memorial includes the original grounds, historical buildings, former crematorium, maintenance building and exhibitions documenting the history of the camp and its victims.  Dachau should not be confused with the Death Camps of the Nazi regime which were built solely for mass killings and were located outside of Germany.  The camp was liberated by USA forces under the ultimate command of General George Patton on 29 April 2025 when it still housed some 32,000 prisoners, most in extremely poor health.

Day 14 – Wednesday 8 September 2027 – Munich – Golf Game 8 – Valley Golf Club

Golf Game 8 – Our final tour game is at Golf Valley Munchen, more commonly known as Valley Golf Club, and ranked #40 in Germany and #7 in southwest Germany. At   last count there were 436 x 18 hole golf courses in Germany which indicates the value of this ranking.  The course comprising three nines and is located only 35 minutes from our hotel.  The 7th hole island green is a true test of a player’s skill.

Tonight, we will meet up at 7 pm for drinks followed by our farewell dinner.

Day 15 – Thursday 9 September 2027

Say goodbye to your many newfound friends today as we end the tour after breakfast.

For those joining our Crystal Symphony Golf Cruise commencing 13 September, you will have 4 nights to spend as you please with a AUD250/500 pp credit towards the travel necessary to get you to Lisbon or Barcelona. The credit will be applied to your final balance invoice and it is not necessary to make your travel arrangements for this component with Trendsetter.

Policies of Budapest to Munich – 26 August to 9 September 2027

Golf cruises offer golfers an interesting way to travel, enjoy your passion for the game and remain fit while partaking in the gourmet delights most luxury cruise ships offer.  For those looking at the options available for you and your fellow keen golfers, here are some pro tips to help you find a cruise that meets all your needs. Finally, your ship has come in!

Check the itinerary

Check the itinerary before you book, to ensure it is a realistic schedule. Seek a cruise that features long and plentiful shore days at ports with good golf courses.  You will probably appreciate the occasional sea day to rest up and relax.

Go all-inclusive to save

High-profile US tour companies typically price their golf at US$500 (A$650) plus per person per round in addition to the cost of the cruise. Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre specialises in small all-inclusive luxury ships, and recommends this for the best experience.  Playing the same courses as its more expensive pier group, the golf package component of a Trendsetter cruise less than half the price of its international competitors.

Ship size does matter

Be wary of cruises for more than 1,300 passengers.  Large ships will give priority to their own tours when it comes to disembarking, preventing independently organised golfers from exiting the ship quickly.  Delays can mean missing tee-off times.  Even if you can overcome a late arrival, the delay can cause disappointment when you must abandon the course early to return to your cruise shipboat. David Cooper, the director of Trendsetter Travel, recommends selecting a cruise ship with between 100 and 900 passengers. “These smaller ships can also get to the smaller ports, such as St. Tropez, St. Malo, Menorca, Portofino, which all have great golf courses.”

Make sure you get enough time at port

Most golf excursions take at least eight hours—including return transportation to the course, an un-pressured golf game and importantly time post golf at the club for refreshments and prize giving. To make the most of your day, aim for a minimum of ten hours in port. Your group will need to arrive at the course an hour prior to tee-off, and allow for a round of four balls to be completed (plan on four and ½ hours hours).

Healthy competition and fair play

Select a golf cruise where the organisers incorporate adjustments up and down for players’ handicaps, after each round.  This means that the prize money is spread around over the tour. David Cooper advises to ask about this when you are booking.  “We run a handicap adjustment system after each round to establish a par stableford score for the day,” he says. “After eight games, the better performers may see their handicaps reduce perhaps two shots and the ‘battlers’ might earn four or five shots back.” Every tour golfer wants at least one collect.

Swing your partner ‘round

Cooper advises, “Where our golf tour participants book as a couple, they will always play as a couple unless they request otherwise.”  If you are booking as a single or wish to enhance the challenge by playing outside of your group, find an organiser who is mindful of matching players’ handicaps, so that you can get the most out of the cruise.

Beware the fake golf cruise

You may discover cruises advertised as a golf tour but, on closer inspection, find they only offer golfing pre and post cruise.  Check for this, as it might not be what you have in mind. Trendsetter golf cruises schedule a minimum of six games on ocean cruise shore days.  David Cooper mentions, “We even create opportunities where a golf enthusiast can play additional optional rounds, and others can have a more limited golf programme depending on what they are looking for with equitable downward price adjustments.”   To learn more about the great golf cruises that Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre have available, please contact David on 0413 010 638 or +61 413 010 638 (if calling from overseas) or on david@trendsettertravel.com.au
