Trendsetter Travel Golf Tours invites you to join us on our inaugural Mekong River Golf Cruise commencing in Saigon and concluding in Siem Reap. The cruise tour, with an immersive 7 night cruise onboard AmaWaterways Amadara, is structured to show you the history of Saigon and Cambodia and at the same time enjoy golf at a selection of the best golf courses in Saigon, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Many leading golf course architects have found acclaim for their Cambodian and Vietnamese golf courses and among them, we will play two Nick Faldo designs.  Golf here is of a generally very high standard. It is played with female caddies, one per golfer, and a mandatory golf cart.  In practice, you can walk the whole course, only jumping on the golf cart when you prefer. Your caddy will always be there with a selection of golf clubs, including the club you would prefer to use. Playing golf with caddies makes golf in Cambodia and Vietnam a real pleasure.

While this is a golf tour, there will be plentiful opportunities to soak up the sites and culture of Vietnam and Cambodia.  There will be day tours of both Saigon and Siem Reap, including Angkor Wat, and you will be free to participate in AmaWaterways tours on all but 2 of the days of the cruise.  (However, if you prefer to opt out of one of the two games golf in Phnom Penh, this is possible with an equitable price reduction).

Amadara is a beautiful presented ship and features French Colonial décor throughout. The richly carved wooden furniture takes inspiration from the history of the region.  Air-conditioned interior corridors lead to spacious staterooms and suites, most featuring twin balconies that invite the ever-changing scenery of Southeast Asia inside.  Amadara will cater to your every whim, with massage rooms, a fitness room, a gift shop and relaxing Sun Deck pool.  A stunning Saigon Lounge provides respite by day and unites guests over intriguing local entertainment by night.  Savour authentic regional delicacies and Western cuisine in the Main Restaurant or dine at The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant. Be treated to unlimited complimentary wine with lunch and dinner, as well as house brand spirits, local beer and soft drinks throughout your cruise.

Our hotels in both Saigon and Siem Reap are rated 5 star luxury and offer 43/46 sqm rooms with ample sized bathrooms, and separate walk in shower and bath.  On Amadara, we have secured a group allotment mainly comprising the best and preferred top deck rooms.

We have deliberately chosen March as the best time for this tour given it is still the dry season and temperatures will be reasonable for both touring and golf.

The official currency in Vietnam is the Vietnamese Dong (VPN).  However, most suppliers quote in USD and cash notes in both VPN and USD are acceptable tender everywhere.  The exchange rate, as at 12 August 2025, is 26,200 VPN to USD 1.  You should obtain some VPN either at the airport on arrival or at a currency machine in Saigon.  Tipping is expected just about everywhere in Vietnam and Cambodia, and having smaller denominations of VPN will give you greatest flexibility. You should expect to tip your transfer drivers on arrival/departure (approximately USD5) and  golf caddies (USD 20/25 per round).  Please note that the Vietnamese and Cambodians are a wonderful people – friendly and hard working.

Your tour hosts are Adrienne Witteman and David Cooper, Directors/Co-Owners of Trendsetter Travel Golf Tours.  Both are enthusiastic golfers and longstanding members of one of Sydney’s most prestigious golf clubs.  They have golfed and cruised extensively around the world and invite you to join them on this fantastic cruise and golf tour.

** Following the conclusion of our tour in Siem Reap on 19 March 2027, Trendsetter Travel Golf Tours will commence a 14 night Vietnam golf tour 20 March/03 April   This will commence in the beautiful city of Hanoi and conclude in Saigon with a combination of golf and touring throughout.  That itinerary will be released within the next 3-4 months. Those deposited on the Mekong River Golf Cruise will have priority option to join the tour and receive a credit of AUD 250 pp towards their flight from Siem Reap to Hanoi.

Today we are booked to play the East Course at Vietnam Golf & Country Club.  Designed by Lee Travino and opened in 1997, it is a very well-established golf course and has hosted various Asian PGA Tour events. It is also located quite close to central Saigon, thus minimising coach travel time.

This morning enjoy free time to independently explore Saigon, shop, or collect the your new made-to-measure clothing.

Around 12 noon, we will coach to our cruise departure point, My Tho Port, on the Mekong River. Amadara is scheduled to depart at 2.30 pm cruising upstream towards our first berthing port, Cai Be.

Tonight, enjoy a welcome reception and dinner before a restful night in your lovely room while Amadara remains berthed overnight.

Day 6 – Tuesday 9 March 2027 – Day 2 Mekong Cruising

Prior to leaving Cai Be at the scheduled time of 11.30 am, enjoy one  of two shore excursions.

The first option is a 90 minute tour of the local candy making workshops where you will see demonstrations in making candy, rice paper and regional snacks.

Alternatively, you can take a 3 hour excursion, by boat, to Kiet’s House, one of the most historical houses in Delta area. The house was built 150 years ago in traditional Vietnamese style. Kiet’s House is famous for its meticulously detailed and elegant carvings on the walls, wooden pillars, doors and gate, and features a range of antiquities and priceless ceramic products throughout. The house visit ends with a visit to the aforementioned local candy workshops.

Amadara then sails for 3 ½ hours to berth in Sa Dec, from where you can take a 2 hour walking tour of the local market and Cao Dai Temple.

This evening sail overnight towards Tan Chau.

Day 7 – Wednesday 10 March 2027 - Day 3 Mekong Cruising

Today we berth around 7 a.m. at Tan Chau.

Option 1 (2 hours) is a trishaw ride around Tan Chau with stops at both a silk-making workshop and another that produces rattan mats.

Option 2 (4 hours) combines Option 1 with a small local boat trip through narrow channels to several scenic locations, including a small village known as “Evergreen Island”.

Option 3 (5 hours) explores the Mekong Delta and visits Vietnam’s ethereal Tra Su Forest and Sanctuary. Glide by sampan through a diverse ecosystem that includes more than 70 species of birds, including the painted stork and oriental darter.

Day 8 – Thursday 11 March 2027 – Day 4 on the Mekong – Phnom Penh – Golf Game 3 - Chhun On Golf Course

Amadara is scheduled to arrive at 7 a.m. in Phnom Penh, and will remain berthed here for 48 hours  allowing 2 x full days.

For those electing not to golf today, there are two morning tours on offer. Option 1 will visit the Central Markets, while Option 2 is a city tour and includes the National Museum.  Both tours are 3 hours duration.

This afternoon, there is a 4 x hour coach/walking tour focussed on the “Killing Fields”.  Visit the Khmer Rouge’s grim S21 Detention Center and learn about one of the darkest periods in Cambodian history.

Golf Game 3 – Today play one of two courses at the highly regarded 36 hole Chhun On Golf Resort.

Day 9 – Friday 12 March 2027 – Day 5 on the Mekong – Phnom Penh – Golf Game 4 – Vattanac Golf Club

Non-golfers: Today’s morning excursion takes you to Oudong, Cambodia’s former royal capital from the early 17th century until 1866. After a Buddhist Blessing Ceremony at the monastery, the tour then splits up into two groups – the first to enjoy a walking tour of Oudong, and the second an active hiking tour with 409 steps up to enjoy a panoramic view of Oudong.

Relax this afternoon with a 90 minute tuk tuk tour of Phnom Penh and make the most of plentiful photo stops.

Golf Game 4 – today we drive to the outskirts of Phnom Penh and play one of the two Nick Faldo designed golf courses at Vattanac Golf Club. Which course we play will be decided when bookings open officially but as both compete for the ranking of the # 1 golf course in Cambodia, you will not be disappointed.

Day 10 – Saturday 13 March 2027 – Day 6 – Mekong Cruising

Amadara departs Phnom Penh at 7 a.m., and as we breakfast we‘ll enjoy scenic sailing as far as Oknhatey Village to arrive by 8.30 a.m. At Oknhatey, there’s a tuk tuk ride to a local elementary school and an opportunity to view traditional silk weaving.  Or you might opt for a shorter tuk tuk ride and a walk around Oknhately.

Depart late this morning and cruise towards Angkor Ban, where we berth early evening and remain overnight.

Day 11 – Sunday 14 March 2027 – Day 7 – Mekong Cruising

Angkor Ban is the only village on the Mekong that was not destroyed during the Khmer Rouge regime.  Here, take the opportunity to join a walking tour of the village and view typical Cambodian stilted houses,  some of which are nearly a century old. Witness this slice of rural life that remains barely unchanged for centuries.

Amadara will depart Angkor Ban and arrive at Kampong Cham at mid-afternoon. We will berth here overnight.

While here, Amadara offers you the choice of two tours.  Option 1 is a trip to the Twin Mountains – the Khmer legend has it that the twin mountains were formed as the result of a competition between the men and women of an ancient Cambodian kingdom to resolve which gender would be responsible for wedding proposals.

Option 2 is a trip to Wat Nokor, the famous Angkorian temple, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Day 12 – Monday 15 March 2027 – Day 8 – Kampong Chan to Siem Reap

This morning bid farewell to Amadara as our cruise concludes after breakfast in Kampong Cham and we transfer to Siem Reap, gateway to Angkor, and former capital of the Khmer Empire.

Our stay in Angkor is at the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort, a luxury hotel offering spacious 46 sqm rooms with separate bath and shower, and a lovely terrace for free time relaxation.

Day 13 – Tuesday 16 March 2027 – Siem Reap – Golf Game 5 - Angkor Golf Resort

Over recent years, new golf course development has seen Siem Reap emerge as a leading destination for golf in Cambodia, and arguably throughout South East Asia.  There are now 3 top golf courses in Siem Reap and we will play the best two of these – Angkor Golf Resort and Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort. Today we golf at the Nick Faldo designed Angkor Golf Resort.

Day 14 – Wednesday 17 March 2027 – Siem Reap – Angkor Wat

World famous Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument, was built in the 12th century by King Suryavarman II as a Hindu temple for Vishnu and later transformed into a Buddhist shrine.  For many years it lay buried in the jungle, hidden amongst a tangle of vines and vegetation until discovered by a French archaeologist in the 1860s.  Surrounded by a vast moat and crowned with five iconic towers representing Mount Meru, the UNESCO World Heritage listed temples of Angkor Wat are famed for their intricate carvings and sweeping causeways. The views at sunrise are particularly breathtaking and now draw millions of visitors annually to what has become since their discovery, the symbol of Cambodia.

Please note that dress restrictions apply.  For men, long trousers and shirts with sleeves. For women, modest dresses or skirts, tops with sleeves, comfortable trousers.

Day 15 – Thursday 18 March 2027 – Siem Reap – Golf Game 6 – Phokeethra Golf Course

Our final golf round is at Phokeethra Golf & Spa Resort, a short transfer from our hotel.

Phokeethra Golf Course offers a distinct challenge, with its championship layout weaving through natural lakes and palm-fringed fairways. Lush landscapes frame each hole, inviting players to test their skills against water hazards and gentle undulations. After a rewarding day on the green, relax and recount memorable shots with fellow travellers, as the anticipation builds for the evening’s special celebration.

Tonight, we will have our tour final pre dinner drinks and dinner at the Sofitel Hotel.  During dinner, we will announce and celebrate the winners of the highest cumulative stableford scores over 72 holes in Cambodia, male and female, with the best 3 of 4 scores to count.

Day 16 – Friday 19 March 2027

Say goodbye to your many new found friends today as we end the tour after breakfast. Enjoy an included airport transfer to Siem Reap International Airport (available on a subsequent day if you extend your stay at the Sofitel).

Policies of Luxury Mekong River Golf Tour – 15 Nights, 4 to 19 March 2027

Golf cruises offer golfers an interesting way to travel, enjoy your passion for the game and remain fit while partaking in the gourmet delights most luxury cruise ships offer.  For those looking at the options available for you and your fellow keen golfers, here are some pro tips to help you find a cruise that meets all your needs. Finally, your ship has come in!

Check the itinerary

Check the itinerary before you book, to ensure it is a realistic schedule. Seek a cruise that features long and plentiful shore days at ports with good golf courses.  You will probably appreciate the occasional sea day to rest up and relax.

Go all-inclusive to save

High-profile US tour companies typically price their golf at US$500 (A$650) plus per person per round in addition to the cost of the cruise. Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre specialises in small all-inclusive luxury ships, and recommends this for the best experience.  Playing the same courses as its more expensive pier group, the golf package component of a Trendsetter cruise less than half the price of its international competitors.

Ship size does matter

Be wary of cruises for more than 1,300 passengers.  Large ships will give priority to their own tours when it comes to disembarking, preventing independently organised golfers from exiting the ship quickly.  Delays can mean missing tee-off times.  Even if you can overcome a late arrival, the delay can cause disappointment when you must abandon the course early to return to your cruise shipboat. David Cooper, the director of Trendsetter Travel, recommends selecting a cruise ship with between 100 and 900 passengers. “These smaller ships can also get to the smaller ports, such as St. Tropez, St. Malo, Menorca, Portofino, which all have great golf courses.”

Make sure you get enough time at port

Most golf excursions take at least eight hours—including return transportation to the course, an un-pressured golf game and importantly time post golf at the club for refreshments and prize giving. To make the most of your day, aim for a minimum of ten hours in port. Your group will need to arrive at the course an hour prior to tee-off, and allow for a round of four balls to be completed (plan on four and ½ hours hours).

Healthy competition and fair play

Select a golf cruise where the organisers incorporate adjustments up and down for players’ handicaps, after each round.  This means that the prize money is spread around over the tour. David Cooper advises to ask about this when you are booking.  “We run a handicap adjustment system after each round to establish a par stableford score for the day,” he says. “After eight games, the better performers may see their handicaps reduce perhaps two shots and the ‘battlers’ might earn four or five shots back.” Every tour golfer wants at least one collect.

Swing your partner ‘round

Cooper advises, “Where our golf tour participants book as a couple, they will always play as a couple unless they request otherwise.”  If you are booking as a single or wish to enhance the challenge by playing outside of your group, find an organiser who is mindful of matching players’ handicaps, so that you can get the most out of the cruise.

Beware the fake golf cruise

You may discover cruises advertised as a golf tour but, on closer inspection, find they only offer golfing pre and post cruise.  Check for this, as it might not be what you have in mind. Trendsetter golf cruises schedule a minimum of six games on ocean cruise shore days.  David Cooper mentions, “We even create opportunities where a golf enthusiast can play additional optional rounds, and others can have a more limited golf programme depending on what they are looking for with equitable downward price adjustments.”   To learn more about the great golf cruises that Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre have available, please contact David on 0413 010 638 or +61 413 010 638 (if calling from overseas) or on david@trendsettertravel.com.au
