Day 1 - Sunday 19 May 2019 - board in Greenwich - England (in port overnight)

This afternoon board Silver Whisper in Greenwich to commence your cruise down the west coast of Europe, into the Mediterranean and on to Barcelona.

Trendsetter has some great pre-cruise hotel package deals to offer for all budgets in and around London.

Day 2 - Monday 20 May 2019 - Greenwich - England (Golf) - depart port at 2.30 pm

After an over-night stay, the morning awaits to explore Greenwich, located on the River Thames.  Whether this is a visit to the huge National Maritime Museum, the Cutty Sark, or the Royal Observatory, there is much to see.

Golf:  An early morning starts sees us teeing off at nearby Royal Blackheath Golf Club, the oldest golf club in the world, with its formation in 1608.  However, the course we play was laid out in the comparative recent time of 1892.

If time permits, we should have an opportunity to explore the historic clubrooms post golf and have refreshments before our short transfer back to Silver Whisper.

We sail mid-afternoon and can partake in fascinating scenery as we sail down the Thames into the English Channel and sail on over-night to Honfleur in France.

Day 3 - Tuesday 21 May 2019 - Honfleur - France (Golf) - in port from 8 am to 6 pm

We berth early morning within walking distance of the much photographed historic port town of Honfleur.  After golf, there will be time to explore the historic township of Honfleur, located on the banks of the estuary of the famous Seine River.

Golf:  We play Golf Barriere Deauville, one of the leading golf courses in this region and a very popular course with previous golf cruises.  This course is a pleasure to play with its perfect conditioning, challenging park layout and fine club rooms.

Day 4 -Wednesday 22 May 2019 - St Malo - France (Golf) - in port 8 am to 6 pm

Berth this morning at the famous port city of Saint Malo. With a long maritime history of seafarers, piracy included, this is an attractive and easy port to explore with many fascinating sites to visit.

Golf:  today is at the nearby Golf de Dinard, rated one of the best 4 courses in north west France and founded in 1887.

Day 5 - Thursday 23 May 2019 - Day at Sea

Today we have a relaxing sea day as we sail around Brittany Peninsula and up the Garonne River to Bordeaux.

Day 6 - Friday 24 May 2019 - Bordeaux - France (Golf) - in port from 8 am (over-night)

Arriving early morning in Bordeaux, once France’s richest community and largest port but now second only to Paris in terms of size.  Famous for its delicious cuisine and wines, particularly from the well-known wine areas of the Medoc and Saint Emilion – both areas that we will visit on our two golfing excursions.  Silver Whisper will berth within a short walk of the historic down town district of Bordeaux.  There is expected to be time to explore Bordeaux by foot late afternoon following your return from golf.

Golf: Shortly following our berthing, we drive 60 km through the wine growing areas of Bordeaux to play the Tom Doak designed Golfique du Grand Saint-Emilionnais (2015).  While Doak is famous for his design of many great courses including Barnbougle Dunes, Pacific Dunes (Oregon) and Cape Kidnappers, this is his first design in Europe.  Since opening, it has been rated one of the top 10 courses in France.

Day 7 - Saturday 25 May 2019 - Bordeaux - France (Golf) - depart 6 pm

Following golf today, we will have a most pleasant sail down the Garonne River to its estuary and out into the Bay of Biscay and on our way overnight to Bilbao.

Golf:  Today we travel 30 minutes to Golf du Medoc’s Vines Course, designed by Canadian Rod Whitman.  It is rated as one of the top 10 courses in south west France.

Day 8 - Sunday 26 May 2019 - Bilbao - Spain (Golf) - in port from 8 am to 5 pm

This morning arrive in historic Bilbao, home to the world famous Guggenheim Museum (open 10 am to 8 pm). This is a must see.  However, for those that have previously visited Bilbao, and the Guggenheim Museum, we have secured playing times from 9:30 am at one of the better golf courses in Bilbao.

Golf:  play at Club Deportivo Ganguren Golf, a 30 minute drive from where our ship is berthed.

Day 9 - Monday 27 May 2019 - Day at Sea

Today we have another relaxing sea day as we sail south down the Iberian Peninsula to the famous port city of Lisbon.

Day 10 - Tuesday 28 May 2019 - Lisbon - Portugal - in port from 9.00 am (over-night)

We spend today in Lisbon, capital of the once great Portuguese empire and one of Europe’s premier historic cities, largely unscathed by the many European wars of the past two centuries.  Located amid the hills and valleys of the northern shores of the River Targus, Lisbon is a joy to discover.

Golf:  As an additional extra, we have organised golf at Oitavos Dunes, with a limited number of tee off times from  12.24 pm. It is, rated by Golf Digest as in the top 60 golf courses in the world. It is rated in the top 3 of courses in Portugal. Cost will be Euro 250 pp.

Day 11 - Wednesday 29 May 2019 - Lisbon - Portugal - depart port at 1.00 pm

Day 12 - Thursday 30 May 2019 - Cadiz - Spain (Golf) - in port from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm -

Silver Whisper will berth early morning at Cadiz.  Founded around 1,100 BC, Cadiz claims to be the oldest continually occupied city in the Western World.  Once one of the wealthiest ports in the world, it was made famous in English history when Sir Francis Drake invaded and plundered the port city with a surprise raid in 1587.  Post golf, if time permits, we suggest strolling one of the many self-guided walks of the historic areas of Cadiz.

Golf:  we play Montecastillo Barceló Golf Club, the highest rated of the many golf courses near Cadiz.  Designed by Jack Nicklaus in 1992, it has been the venue for many professional tournaments on the European PGA Tour.  It will be a pleasure to play even though it is one of the toughest courses we play on tour.  You will need to be on top of your game to play to your handicap on this course.

Day 13 - Friday 31 May 2019 - Malaga - Spain (Golf) - in port from 8.00 am to 7 pm

Malaga is the main port city of the Costa del Sol, famous for its over 100 golf courses.  For those choosing not to golf today, Malaga is an interesting port city to explore and perhaps lunch at one of the many outdoor restaurants.  Of the many tourist attractions in Malaga, perhaps the best to visit is the Pablo Picasso Museum, walking distance from where Silver Whisper is berthed.

Golf: we will play Marbella Golf & Country Club, located on the coast, 56 km east of Malaga.  The course (1989) is a Robert Jones (Snr) design and has many holes with elevation changes.  Complimentary motorised cart hire is included with green fees.

Policies of London (Greenwich) to Barcelona Cruise – May/June 2019

Golf cruises offer golfers an interesting way to travel, enjoy your passion for the game and remain fit while partaking in the gourmet delights most luxury cruise ships offer.  For those looking at the options available for you and your fellow keen golfers, here are some pro tips to help you find a cruise that meets all your needs. Finally, your ship has come in!

Check the itinerary

Check the itinerary before you book, to ensure it is a realistic schedule. Seek a cruise that features long and plentiful shore days at ports with good golf courses.  You will probably appreciate the occasional sea day to rest up and relax.

Go all-inclusive to save

High-profile US tour companies typically price their golf at US$500 (A$650) plus per person per round in addition to the cost of the cruise. Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre specialises in small all-inclusive luxury ships, and recommends this for the best experience.  Playing the same courses as its more expensive pier group, the golf package component of a Trendsetter cruise less than half the price of its international competitors.

Ship size does matter

Be wary of cruises for more than 1,300 passengers.  Large ships will give priority to their own tours when it comes to disembarking, preventing independently organised golfers from exiting the ship quickly.  Delays can mean missing tee-off times.  Even if you can overcome a late arrival, the delay can cause disappointment when you must abandon the course early to return to your cruise shipboat. David Cooper, the director of Trendsetter Travel, recommends selecting a cruise ship with between 100 and 900 passengers. “These smaller ships can also get to the smaller ports, such as St. Tropez, St. Malo, Menorca, Portofino, which all have great golf courses.”

Make sure you get enough time at port

Most golf excursions take at least eight hours—including return transportation to the course, an un-pressured golf game and importantly time post golf at the club for refreshments and prize giving. To make the most of your day, aim for a minimum of ten hours in port. Your group will need to arrive at the course an hour prior to tee-off, and allow for a round of four balls to be completed (plan on four and ½ hours hours).

Healthy competition and fair play

Select a golf cruise where the organisers incorporate adjustments up and down for players’ handicaps, after each round.  This means that the prize money is spread around over the tour. David Cooper advises to ask about this when you are booking.  “We run a handicap adjustment system after each round to establish a par stableford score for the day,” he says. “After eight games, the better performers may see their handicaps reduce perhaps two shots and the ‘battlers’ might earn four or five shots back.” Every tour golfer wants at least one collect.

Swing your partner ‘round

Cooper advises, “Where our golf tour participants book as a couple, they will always play as a couple unless they request otherwise.”  If you are booking as a single or wish to enhance the challenge by playing outside of your group, find an organiser who is mindful of matching players’ handicaps, so that you can get the most out of the cruise.

Beware the fake golf cruise

You may discover cruises advertised as a golf tour but, on closer inspection, find they only offer golfing pre and post cruise.  Check for this, as it might not be what you have in mind. Trendsetter golf cruises schedule a minimum of six games on ocean cruise shore days.  David Cooper mentions, “We even create opportunities where a golf enthusiast can play additional optional rounds, and others can have a more limited golf programme depending on what they are looking for with equitable downward price adjustments.”   To learn more about the great golf cruises that Trendsetter Travel and Cruise Centre have available, please contact David on 0413 010 638 or +61 413 010 638 (if calling from overseas) or on david@trendsettertravel.com.au
