Itinerary

Queen Alia International Airport - Amman

Arrive at Queen Alia International, Amman, Jordan.

Welcome to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, a country with outstanding ancient history, biblical sites of importance and beautiful desert landscapes. The white stone city of Amman is the capital of Jordan and a good base from which to explore the destination’s extraordinary heritage.

Amman, the capital of Jordan, is a fascinating city of contrasts – a unique blend of old and new, ideally situated on a hilly area between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley. In the commercial heart of the city, ultra-modern buildings, hotels, smart restaurants, art galleries and boutiques rub shoulders comfortably with traditional coffee shops and tiny artisans’ workshops. Everywhere there is evidence of the city’s much older past. Due to the city’s modern-day prosperity and temperate climate, almost half of Jordan’s population is concentrated in the Amman area. The residential suburbs consist mainly of tree-lined streets and avenues flanked by elegant, almost uniformly white houses in accordance with a municipal law, which states that all buildings must be faced with local stone. The downtown area is much older and more traditional with smaller businesses producing and selling everything from fabulous jewellery to everyday household items.

You will be met by a representative at the airport (before customs and immigration), who will be holding a yellow and blue A&K sign for identification.

Transfer in a modern air-conditioned vehicle to your hotel.

Amman City Tour - Jerash - Amman

Breakfast is served at our hotel in Amman.

09:00 Meet our Abercrombie & Kent guide and driver and start the day with a city tour in Amman.

The Citadel towers above the city from atop Jabal al-Qala’a, making it an excellent vantage point to appreciate the cityscape below. The Citadel is the site of ancient Rabbath-Ammon and excavations here have revealed numerous Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic remains. The most impressive building of the Citadel, known simply as al-Qasr (the Palace), dates to the Islamic Umayyad period. Its exact function is unclear, but it includes a monumental gateway, an audience hall and four vaulted chambers. A colonnaded street also runs through the complex. To the north and northeast are the ruins of Umayyad palace grounds.

Downhill from the Citadel and five minutes’ walk east from downtown, the Roman Theater is the most prominent and impressive relic of ancient Philadelphia. The theater, which was built during the reign of Antonius Pius (AD 138-161), is cut into the northern side of a hill that once served as a necropolis or graveyard. It is very similar in design to the amphitheater at Jerash and can accommodate 6,000 spectators. The theater is still used periodically for sporting and cultural events.

The National Archaeological Museum houses an excellent collection of Jordanian antiquities dating from prehistoric times to the 15th Century. In the collection, three items are of particular importance: the Dead Sea Copper Scrolls, the Neolithic plaster statues of Ain Ghazal and the anthropomorphic pottery coffins, which give an insight into ancient burial practices.

Located near the Roman Theater, this museum provides a record of traditional Jordanian life, including costumes, home furnishings, musical instruments and handicrafts dating back to the 19th Century.

11:00 Transfer to Jerash (The drive takes around 1 hour)
12:00 Lunch at Lebanese House Restaurant, specialising in genuine Lebanese cuisine with a a wide range of menu items, topped off with exceptional Lebanese service and Arab hospitality.

After lunch we continue our tour with a visit to Jerash.

Neolithic, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad eras, among others, are found here. Jerash’s golden age, however, arrived with Roman rulers. Today, Jerash is acknowledged as one of the best-preserved province cities of the Roman Empire. Jerash was also a member of the Decapolis, a dynamic commercial league of ten Greco-Roman cities which were grouped together because of their language, culture, location and political status, with each functioning as an autonomous city-state.

16:30 Approximate return to our hotel.

Amman - Mount Nebo - Madaba -Shoubak - Petra

Breakfast is served at our hotel in Amman.

09:00 Checkout, meet our private Abercrombie & Kent guide and driver and start today with a drive to Mount Nebo. The drive takes around 60 minutes.

10:00 Mount Nebo is the mountain mentioned in the bible where Moses was granted a view of the Holy Land but was not allowed to enter it. Nowadays the mountain is a memorial site where the “Church of Moses” stands. Ever since the first days of Christianity this mountain has been a holy place and a destination for pilgrims. From here, enjoy a magnificent view over Jordan, the Dead Sea and Israel. When the weather is clear, you may even be able to see Jerusalem, which is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) away.

10:45 Afterwards, continue to Madaba, approximately 15 minutes’ drive from Mt. Nebo

South of Amman proudly stands Madaba, the “City of Mosaics”, perched on an archaeological site with more than 4,000 years of history buried beneath it. The quality and quantity of the mosaic flooring found here has made Madaba one of the most prominent cities in the world for mosaics. St. George’s Church houses a world-famous mosaic floor containing a large mosaic map of Palestine, which also features a detailed map of Jerusalem as it was during the sixth century. At the Church of the Apostles, at the southern entrance of the city, is a mosaic floor attributed to the craftsman Salamanios, depicting the sea, with the central figure of a woman encircled with a selection of creatures, vegetation and an inscription.

12:30 Lunch will be served at Haret Jdoudna, in a restaurant within authentic replica village in the city of Madaba. This village showcases traditional food, entertainment, local crafts, mosaics and souvenirs. The restaurant itself is a 19th century house, still with its original features and floors. The exquisite menu offers local mezza dishes, oven-baked delicacies and traditional home-made meals.

After our visit we will travel to Shoubak, a journey of around 2 hours 30 minutes.

Shoubak Castle has a long and distinguished history that reached its peak during Crusader times. The magnificent fortress was constructed in AD 1115 by Baldwin I, as a link in the great chain of crusader strongholds across Jordan. The fortress, known as Mont Realis (or Montreal) guarded the crucial Damascus to Cairo trade route.

After drive to 30 minutes to Petra.

The Movenpick Resort Petra is located directly at the entrance to the historic city of Petra. This resort, with an oriental flair, features an exciting combination of natural stone, handcrafted wood and luxurious Middle Eastern fabrics and textures. With 183 newly renovated rooms and suites and a wide variety of restaurants for your culinary cravings, the Movenpick Resort Petra will certainly provide long-lasting memories.

Petra visit - Aqaba

09:00 Meet our guide in the hotel lobby after breakfast to walk to the Visitor’s Centre, where our tour of the ancient city will commence.
A worldwide wonder, Petra is without doubt Jordan’s most valuable treasure and its greatest tourist attraction. It is a vast, unique city, carved into the sheer rock face by the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab civilization who settled here more than 2000 years ago. They turned the site into an important junction for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India, and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece, and Rome. Entrance to the city is through the Siq, a narrow gorge, over 1 km in length, which is flanked on either side by soaring, 80m high cliffs. Just walking through the Siq is an experience. The colors and formations of the rocks are dazzling. As you reach the end of the Siq you will catch your first glimpse of Al-Khazneh (The Treasury).

Begin your visit with an optional horse ride from the main gate of Petra to the entrance of the old city. Then walk on foot along to the Siq (entrance). The ancient city of Petra was built between 800 BC to AD 100 by Nabatean Arabs. In this era Petra was a fortress, carved out of the jagged rocks in an area, which was virtually inaccessible. In the first and second century, after the Romans invaded, the city reached the peak of its fame.

Petra covers an area of about 100 square kilometers (62 miles), where over 800 monuments can be found. When shipping slowly displaced caravan routes, the city’s importance gradually dwindled and it fell into disuse and was lost to the world until 1812, when it was re-discovered by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burkhart. Nowadays Petra is a popular tourist attraction, known as the “rose-red city half as old as time”. The Khazneh (the Treasury), featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

12:00 Lunch at Basin Restaurant. Located about 2 km (1 mile) inside the gates of Petra, the Basin Restaurant by the Crowne Plaza Petra stands amongst all the splendor of Petra. This is a great place to stop and rest your tired feet, and is one of the few places within Petra to enjoy sit down lunch.

After lunch transfer to Aqaba (2 hour drive).

16:00 arrive Aqaba

Aqaba

Breakfast is served at our hotel in Aqaba.

Greatly prized as Jordan’s window to the sea, Aqaba brings a refreshing release from the rose-colored desert to the north. Its sandy beaches and coral reefs are the most pristine on the Red sea and Jordanians continuously work hard to preserve it as such. It was built over the remains of several very ancient sites. After the discovery of a Calcholitic site (Tell Maquss), there have been extensive excavations on the sea front, to unearth the remains of Ayla, probably the biblical Salomon port. Apart from its long history, Aqaba is also renowned for its crystal clear, year round warm waters. Conditions are ideal for underwater photography, and a lavish array of exotic fish and plant life makes for excellent snorkeling and diving. Over 140 species of coral have been identified in Aqaba’s waters.

For (Golfers) 18 Holes Championship Golf course

As it is assumed all will be travelling with their golf clubs (which will follow us around Jordan in a luggage van) we thought it remiss if a game of golf was not offered at the Alya Golf Club, part of the real estate development within Aqaba. The course is international standard and was designed by Greg Norman – it ranks #12 in the Middle East. Golf today is inclusive of green fees, shared motorised golf cart, drinks post golf and prize money. The course is relatively high ranking given the many great golf courses in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and elsewhere in the Middle East.

For (Non Golfers) Wadi Rum Tour 2 hours

For those not golfing, or not wishing to golf, there is a tour to the famous Wadi Rum.

Otherwise known as Valley of the Moon, Wadi Rum is the largest – and most magnificent – of Jordan’s desert landscapes and has been virtually untouched by humans. A maze of monolithic rock formations rises from the desert floor to heights of 1,750 meters (5,740 feet), creating a natural challenge for serious mountaineers. However, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who passed through several times during the Arab Revolt of 1917-18. In the 1980s one of the rock formations in Wadi Rum was named “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom” after Lawrence’s book penned in the aftermath of the war, although the ‘Seven Pillars’ referred to in the book have no connection with Rum.

The tour will commence after breakfast with a transfer time of around 1 hour 30 minutes by four-wheel-drive vehicle. Please note that this excursion is conducted on board a basic, but comfortable, vehicle, which is operated by a local charity foundation. All money generated through these tours helps support the livelihood of the local Bedouins. The tour includes lunch.
