Escorted Auckland to Sydney Golf Cruise
1 to 15 January 2017 (14 Nights)
from AUD4,950 pp twin share inclusive of 7 golf games at leading golf courses
Leading golf cruise specialists, Trendsetter Travel & Cruise Centre, welcomes your joining us on this delightful cruise aboard the elegant 1,250 passenger MS Maasdam.
Our tour starts with an over-night stay in a 4/5 star Auckland hotel, followed by golf next morning at Titirangi, an Alister MacKenzie designed gem. We then board Holland America Line’s MS Maasdam mid- afternoon to commence an enjoyable cruise down the east coast of New Zealand with golf at a further 4 of New Zealand’s leading private golf clubs. After sailing across the Tasman Sea, we play golf at the best courses in south east and north west Tasmania followed by a free day in Melbourne. Nothing beats a cruise arrival into Sydney scheduled for early Sunday morning, 15 January 2017. The tour offers 7 games of golf over its 14 days with 5 of the 7 golf courses having held NZ or Australian National Golf Open events. With long days ashore there should still be time to explore the various ports.
MS Maasdam is a medium sized cruise ship and offers sophistication at a competitive price. Accommodation varies from the modestly priced internal cabins to Verandah suites to luxurious 50 sqm Neptune suites.
Your tour hosts David Cooper & Adrienne Witteman, Directors of Trendsetter Travel & Cruise Centre, are both enthusiastic golfers, and long-time members of The Australian Golf Club. They have golfed extensively throughout the world and many times in New Zealand.
Itinerary
Day 1 – Sunday 1 January 2017 - Auckland
Arrival in Auckland is at your leisure. Make your own way to our group accommodation in Auckland. Breakfast is included.
Day 2 – Monday 2 January 2017 – Auckland with golf prior to cruise departure at 5.00 p.m.
Depart at 8.00 am and drive the 30 minutes to Titirangi Golf Club, one of New Zealand’s premier private golf clubs and ranked in the top 10 golf courses in New Zealand. Titirangi was designed by the great Dr Alister MacKenzie in 1927. He subsequently went on to design many of the world’s great courses including Royal Melbourne, Cypress Point and Augusta National. Following golf, we return to the hotel to collect our stored luggage and transfer to the overseas passenger terminal for a mid-afternoon embarkation.
Enjoy your early evening cruise out of magnificent Auckland harbour into the Hauraki Gulf as we head south down the east coast of the North Island.
Day 3 – Tuesday 3 January 2017 – Tauranga (Golf) – in port 7.00 am – 6.00 pm
After breakfast, we will be transferred to nearby Mount Manganui Golf Club, one of New Zealand’s leading private golf clubs outside of the main metropolitan area and a venue for many professional golf tournaments in years past.
After golf, there should be time to explore the delightful holiday town of Mount Manganui, affectionately known as “the Mount”, and perhaps even enjoy a swim at its famous beach.
Day 4 – Wednesday 4 January 2017 – Napier – in port from noon – 6.00 pm
While there is insufficient time to enjoy a round on one of Napier’s fine courses, you’ll find plenty to enjoy in this fascinating regional city. Napier was effectively destroyed by a huge earthquake in 1931 and the rebuild, in Art Deco fashion typical of that era, has been largely preserved and is now celebrated as a slice of history long since gone elsewhere.
Alternatively, you might like to explore options further afield – the famous Cape Kidnappers gannet colony, or perhaps a lazy lunch at one of the many famous wineries in the Hawkes Bay area.
Day 5 – Thursday 5 January 2017 – Wellington (Golf) – in port from 10.00 am –8.00 pm
After arriving late morning at Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, we’ll transfer 30 minutes north to the Hutt Valley and play the prestigious and recently (2013) redesigned Royal Wellington Golf Club. Now ranked comfortably within the top 10 New Zealand golf clubs, it is undoubtedly the finest park land layout in New Zealand. Since the club was founded in 1895, it has been the venue for 7 New Zealand Open championships and will host the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. We are promised a complimentary cold beer following our round!
Following our return from golf at Royal Wellington, there should be time for an independent stroll around down town Wellington, a city famous for its bar life and talented baristas.
Day 6 – Friday 6 January 2017 – Akaroa/Christchurch (Golf) – in port 9.00 am – 9.00 pm
We will berth in the sheltered Akaroa Harbour and after tender to shore will take a scenic drive to Christchurch to play the city’s leading private golf club, Christchurch Golf Club. This club, the second oldest in New Zealand, has held 11 NZ Golf Opens is secretly proud of its most illustrious son: Sir Bob Charles, New Zealand’s most famous golfer and winner of The Open in 1963. After returning to Akaroa, there should be ample time to wander around the historic French settlement township of Akaroa, prior to boarding the Maasdam for dinner and departure.
Day 7 – Saturday 7 January 2017 – Dunedin (Golf) – in port 9 am – 5 pm
The prestigious Otago Golf Club is located 30 minutes from Dunedin’s Port Chalmers. Apart from being New Zealand’s oldest golf club, it has hosted the NZ Golf Open no fewer than 7 times. We invite you to try and replicate Arnold Palmer’s efforts – in one Open event in the 1960s Arnie drove the green of this famous hole, the par 4 Glenn Hole (photo).
New Zealand hospitality again promises a cold beer at the end of the round and you can look forward to meeting a few of the members as we have been allocated tee off times within the usually busy Saturday club competition.
Day 8 – Sunday 8 January 2017 – Cruising Fiordland National Park
Pray for fine weather today as there is no finer sight in New Zealand than awaking to the stunning beauty of Fiordland National Park and its famous mountain, Mitre Peak. Today is a day for snapping photo after photo of the gorgeous scenery, largely private to our ship since there is scant road access and few ships pass this way.
Day 9 – Monday 9 January 2017 – Sailing The Tasman Sea to Tasmania
Enjoy a relaxing sea day with plenty of on-board delights to keep you entertained – or simply rest up in anticipation of the two Tasmanian golf courses that await on the final leg of our golf cruise.
Day 10 – Tuesday 10 January 2017- Hobart (Golf) – in port 8.00 am – 6.00 pm
We transfer this morning to Royal Hobart Golf Club, the premiere private golf club in Tasmania. Founded a century ago, Royal Hobart received its royal charter in 1925 and has since hosted numerous professional and national amateur tournaments, including the 1971 Australian Open won by Jack Nicklaus.
After returning from golf enjoy time exploring the Hobart waterfront and down town area.
Day 11 – Wednesday 11 January 2017 – Sail to Melbourne
Enjoy a leisurely day at sea before we sail into Port Phillip Bay.
Day 12 – Thursday 12 January 2017 – Melbourne – in port 10.30 am – 7.00 pm
Alas, timing prevents our playing one of the many Melbourne sand belt courses. However, Melbourne promises plentiful alternative activities, either independently or via participation in one of the Maasdam’s many shore excursions.
Day 13 – Friday 13 January 2017 – Burnie, Tasmania (Golf) – in port 9.00 am – 8.00 pm
Burnie is an active commercial port supporting Tasmania’s export logging industry and the gateway to Devonport, and the best golf course in northeast Tasmania. For the last four years, the Devonport Golf Club, has hosted the Tasmanian Senior Open, boasts several challenging holes and is a fitting end to our golf cruise.
Day 14 – Saturday 14 January 2017 – Sailing to Sydney
Relax and enjoy your last full day onboard the lovely MS Maasdam as we sail up the east coast of Australia.
Day 15 – Sunday 15 January 2017 – Arrive in Sydney – 7.00 am
Get up early if you want to experience our ship sail through the heads of Sydney Harbour before berthing downtown. Say good bye to your new golf buddies – until next time – before disembarkation after breakfast.
